Girls Basketball Night at Drexel

Participants with Mario the Dragon

On November 23rd, Playworks participated in a fun filled basketball night at Drexel University! All twelve of the Playworks Philadelphia Girls Basketball Teams were present. The night started off with interactive workshops and games. This portion of the event included various tips and strategies, like teamwork and cooperation, which were relevant to the girls both on and off of the court. After the girls had a pizza party and were showered with prizes, they headed to the basketball game with their families.
Basketball Players Ready to Answer!
The Playwroks Girls Basketball Team had front row seats to a Drexel Dragons Women's Basketball game! The girls cheered on the Drexel team while observing a basketball in action. Having exposure to a collegiate level basketball game allowed the girls to build their own self-esteem. This event was extremely rewarding for the Playworks Girls Basketball League!

Playworks Kicks Off the Girls Basketball League with a Night at Drexel University

Playworks began the Girls Basketball League with an exciting event at Drexel University. All 12 Playworks schools participated in the “10 Feet to Character” Workshop at Goodwin College and enjoyed the Drexel vs. St Joseph’s basketball game. Over 80 students and their families attended the Drexel University Night making the evening a tremendous success!

At the “10 Feet to Character” workshop the girls and the coaches learned the importance of character, persistence and diligence on and off the basketball court. The workshop included an interactive presentation with Playworks games such as Silent Ball. The workshop presenters challenged the girls to work together as a team in a fun competition to build the tallest tower out of only cards of paper.

The workshop concluded with a pizza party and the players were given the chance to bond with the other girls on their team, along with meet and connect with girls from other Playworks schools all over Philadelphia.

Afterwards, the group headed to the Daskalakis Athletic Center for the Drexel Dragons vs. St. Joseph’s Hawks women’s basketball game. Girls cheered, danced and learned more about basketball during an exciting, close scoring game! Several girls rushed down to the court and got the chance to meet and snap a picture with the Drexel Dragon mascot, Mario. Many students commented that this was the first time they had watched a college basketball game and they loved the action. Afterwards, Coach Lisa took students to score autographs from the Drexel players. Both students and coaches left the Drexel University Night ready and excited for the start of basketball season!
